Stable News: It’s hard to believe, but fly season is almost upon us! It’s time to dig out the fly gear, sprays, and ointments. Remember that proper stable management is the first line of defense against pesky insects. Be sure to clean up manure, remove any standing water, and offer your horses clean, dry shelters with good ventilation. Flies and mosquitoes are not only an incredible annoyance, but can also carry dangerous life threatening diseases and parasites. There are many options for feed through fly control with all natural remedies to specially formulated chemical compounds, just check with your favorite supplement provider. There are also plenty of tools to help decrease fly populations around your barn and property including sprayer systems, traps, and fly predators. We recommend researching what is available in your area to determine the right method for you. We will be thinking of you and wish you all good luck in preparing for the incoming aerial assault!
Training Tip of the Month: Never underestimate the importance of proper conditioning! Winter is often a hard time of year to keep horses fit unless you are fortunate enough to have access to an indoor arena. Once you get back in the saddle it is important to treat your horse as an athlete who has had time off and needs to be built up slowly. Start out with a lot of walking and gradually increase the trot and eventually the canter. This should take place over several weeks and will help to prevent unnecessary injury or strain.
