Daphne is a four year old Thoroughbred cross mare from the MSSPA. She stands around 14.3 hands and is dark bay. Unfortunately Daphne has a rough past. In July of 2018, she was rescued with three other horses by an animal control officer in Southern Maine. At the time, she was suffering from a number of problems including; being severely underweight, ill from a heavy parasite load, infested with lice, and lacking dental and hoof care. Not only that but she was feral and couldn’t be easily caught or touched. She was also suffering from a dangerous, painful abdominal hernia. Daphne underwent surgery, requiring general anesthesia; only afterward was pregnancy suspected. Blood testing confirmed the young mare was in foal. Her delivery date was unknown at the time especially with hormonal fluctuation, but then on March 1, 2019, Daphne gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, named Windy River. The
MSSPA has done a great job nursing Daphne back to health and starting the basics with her.
Daphne arrived with us in September, and she is proving to be sweet, sensible, and athletic. When she arrived here, we picked up where the MSSPA left off and focused on obstacle work, groundwork, lunging, and ground driving. Daphne is a lovely mover and picks up on things very quickly. She has now been started under saddle and is doing extremely well. She has been walking, and trotting independently in the ring. We also just recently started cantering her under saddle. Daphne is a very smart, and athletic mare, that is learning very quickly. She is still learning but is definitely starting to catch onto the under saddle concepts. Most recently Daphne also went out on the trails with a rider for the first time, and she didn't fail to impress. This little mare enjoys having a job and loves to be pampered. We can't wait to continue Daphne's training and see what she can do!
