Clyde is a 16 year old, 15.3 hand, draft/cross gelding that is here with us for further training from one of our partner organizations, the MSSPA. Clyde was brought to the MSSPA after being seized by the state. He was rescued with a mare named Bonnie from poor conditions and it was believed that he had been confined to a small space for quite a long time. However, it was the loving people at the MSSPA that provided him with the TLC he needed to have a fresh start in life.
Clyde has been ridden in the past at the MSSPA, but as part of what we do here, and our evaluation process we like to take things slowly, from the ground up. We have been starting with a lot of groundwork with Clyde as he has trouble respecting the space of his handler and staying focused. Feel free to read more about how we helped Clyde with this issue in our blog!
After working with Clyde for a few months now, we have discovered that he is extremely personable and has quickly become a barn favorite. He loves to be groomed, stands well for the farrier, does well with obstacles, and behaves for bath time as well. We’ve begun working Clyde under saddle and while he will need steady conditioning to combat a slightly weak hind end, he is progressing well. We are focusing on trail rides up and down our hills, and softening/stretching work when in the arenas. The hope would be to help this sweet older gentleman gain strength, fitness, and flexibility so that he will be able to make someone an enjoyable partner for years to come.
UPDATE: In October 2020, Clyde was adopted by a lifelong horsewoman right here in Maine. His new life will be all about the partnership, as his new mom enjoys a bit of everything with her horses, including trail rides and picnics in Acadia. We wish Clyde many years of health and happiness with his new family.
