Lucy joins our program from the MSSPA in Windham, ME. She is around 13 years old, 14.2 hh, and we recently learned that she is an Arabian-Tennessee Walker cross. Lucy spent only two months at the MSSPA, but during that time she began groundwork and even had a rider hop aboard bareback. As we do with every horse, we will begin with the basics while allowing Lucy time to settle in to her new environment. Thus far, we’ve observed that she has lovely gaits, gets along well with pasture mates and seems very friendly and people-oriented. We are very excited to continue with her evaluation and education, and will post more info as it becomes available.
June 2023 update: We have had Lucy going walk/trot under saddle for a few months now, and have gotten to know her much better in the meantime! She is an easy keeper, well behaved for the vet and farrier and loves to be groomed. Lucy does display some separation anxiety when away from pasture mates and prefers turn out to being in a stall. We were also able to learn more of her history, which began with a loving home for her first six years of life. Due to a family medical emergency Lucy was then surrendered to a rescue, and subsequently had several different homes before arriving at the MSSPA. Her previous riding experiences were physically demanding, and so when we experienced her resisting forward cues under saddle it made sense when considering her history. We have spent time helping Lucy to move with more softness and balance through her body, and she is making excellent progress.
UPDATE: In August 2023, Lucy was adopted! She will be staying in Maine as a companion to an elderly gelding, who was in need of a buddy after his longtime lady friend died unexpectedly. Lucy never seemed to like being ridden that much, and so we are thrilled that she found a home where she’ll get to simply enjoy being a horse. Many thanks to Alison and Larry for opening their home and hearts to a rescue, and we wish everyone many happy years together.
