2010 Quarter horse/Arab cross mare
Peaches is an adorable 9 year old, 14 hh Palomino pony. She arrived at the end of May 2018 in collaboration with the New Hampshire Society for the Protection of Animals. Peaches came to the NHSPCA as part of a state seizure, having lived her whole life to that point with her mother and brother. At the time she had no previous training and little handling.
Peaches has made huge progress this past year. After a long time spent on the basics of leading and groundwork, we progressed to ponying her on the trails, wearing English tack, lunging, long-lining, and finally riding. Peaches is now green broke and can walk/trot/canter under saddle. She enjoys hacking on the trails and does super with a steady companion for occasional support. We have also begun pole work and some small cross rails with her. She has smooth, steady gaits and responds well to voice cues and subtle aids.
Although Peaches can still get nervous in new situations, she continues to improve with practice. She has started successfully riding out in one of our fields on the property, and even made a trip off property remaining very level-headed the whole time. She is also very willing when it comes to obstacles and straight ties, cross ties, and stands for bathing. She does still need occasional holding for the farrier. Peaches does best in turn out with geldings, or more than one mare, as she can get quite attached to her companions.
This is a sweet little mare who will only continue to improve with consistent handling. She is ready to finish her training with the right person, and would also make a devoted companion pony.
*Update: Peaches has found her new home! She will be living out her years at a lovely little farm in Maine, where she will be continuing in training for pleasure and trails with her new mom, Susan. Peaches will also provide companionship to Susan’s previously rescued gelding who was in need of a friend. We are thrilled for Peaches and her wonderful new family, and we wish everyone many happy trails.
