Giving Horses Hope in Maine

Penny

2006 Standardbred mare

Penny arrived in September 2017 through collaboration with the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Massachusetts. She is a lovely dark bay mare who stands about 15 hh. Little is known of her story except the fact that she had spent the last few years with just a pig for companionship. It is clear that she had limited handling before coming to Nevins Farm in March, and she had not been started under saddle.

We started from scratch with Penny, beginning with lots of groundwork. One of our goals is to help her learn to soften and loosen through her body, so that she can feel relaxed and confident in her work.  As Penny gains strength and conditioning, she has been able to settle more and has made steady progress in her training. She  lunges, stands well for the farrier, and can walk/trot under saddle. She is a sweet and sensitive girl who aims to please, and we look forward to working over the winter to further her skills and experience. Once she has completed her training, Penny will be available for adoption through the MSPCA at Nevins Farm.
