Stable News: With the fluctuation of temperatures here in New England this winter it is super important to make sure your horses are drinking plenty of water and moving around as much as possible. Colic becomes a real threat this time of year, especially impaction colic. Make sure that your horses have access to clean, thawed water at all times and that they also have access to salt/minerals. These can be provided via salt blocks or loosely in their feed. Encourage movement during the winter months as well by spreading out their hay piles/nets and providing as much exercise as possible.
Training Tip of the Month: Do not underestimate the value of bodywork and proper conditioning when training. A horse that is being asked to perform any level of under saddle or even in hand type of work should be viewed and treated like an athlete. You wouldn’t sit on the couch for 6 months and then go run a marathon, neither should your horse. Make sure that you are building your horse’s fitness up slowly after any time off and that you provide ample warm up time especially during the cold winter months. If your horse needs extra support consider bodywork in the form of massage, stretching, chiropractic, etc. A horse that is comfortable and fit is a happy and willing partner.
Rescue Horse Spotlight: We said goodbye to Bear this month and have welcomed Seneca! Seneca is with us for training from the MSSPA and is an 8 year old Appendix Quarter Horse.
