Galaxy is a 15 hh, 15 year old Arab cross mare who joins us for training from Gerda’s Equine Rescue. Galaxy was seized by the state of New York from a hoarding situation, and was urgently in need of proper nutrition and hoof care. She has very thin soles and is sore when barefoot, but is quite the pretty mover as soon as she has her Cloud boots on! We can’t wait to help her feel more comfortable, evaluate what she knows, and give her what she needs to thrGalive.
October 2025 update: We are really enjoying getting to know Galaxy! She is very sweet, very sensitive, and VERY smart. She definitely received an education at some point in her life, and we will continue to assess her knowledge while adding an emphasis on relaxation and thoughtful, proper movement. We have been working with our vet and farrier to help her feet improve, and she is much more comfortable now that she has shoes on! It remains to be seen whether or not she will always require shoes– we are hopeful that over time, her feet can recover from the years of neglect she endured.
February 2026 update: Galaxy is coming along beautifully in her training. With further time in front shoes she appears much more comfortable, and we are supporting that in every way we can through bodywork, chiropractic, and continued emphasis on relaxation and balance. Galaxy is now a pro at all basic groundwork, and is long lining well. We continue to work on her ability to focus and relax when away from her friends, but overall this sensitive little mare is making great progress. If she continues as she has, we will next re-introduce tack and a rider.
April 2026 update: Galaxy is now regularly wearing English tack, and we have begun introducing a rider. Consistent relaxation remains our focus, as some days Galaxy still comes out moving quick and tight. We only climb aboard when a horse is calm, quiet and soft in their demeanor, and so if that is not the case then we continue with groundwork only for that day. We imagine that in Galaxy’s case we are working against years of both anxiety and physical discomfort, which of course are often connected. Helping to rewrite this pattern can be a slow journey, and we are happy to give Galaxy the time and consistency she needs.
