Queenie is a 4 year old, 16 hh Thoroughbred mare who joins us for training from NEER North. She trained on the track but never raced, and has been a part of the NEER program for the past two years. During this time, she was started under saddle and has been slowly brought along at a level appropriate for her young age. This past summer, she was at the point of going walk/trot/canter in the arena, popping small jumps, taking little hacks around the farm, and even participating in a few off property outings.
As we do for all our horses, with Queenie we are beginning with a general physical evaluation and groundwork foundation. We have added front shoes for her comfort, and she is receiving bodywork and will be checked over by the vet and dentist. Thus far, Queenie has shown herself to be a quiet and good-natured girl, who is friendly with people and who gets along well with other mares in her turn out group. We look forward to getting to know this sweet girl, and will post updates as we work with her further.
February 2026 update: Queenie continues to demonstrate a laid-back, friendly demeanor with both horses and humans. She loves grooming and stands quietly for bathing, bodywork and vet care. We are still working on her attention span and the physical balance needed to stand quietly for the farrier. We remain focused on groundwork, long lining, and building Queenie’s understanding and ability to follow a feel and yield softly through her body. She will benefit from continued slow, steady conditioning work to increase her strength and coordination.
April 2026 update: Queenie has been adopted! This sweet girl headed off to her new home in New Hampshire, where she will be brought along slowly and thoughtfully with an eye towards doing a little bit of everything. We are thrilled for Queenie and her loving new mom Olivia, and wish them both many happy years together. Congratulations!
