As the saying goes, good things come in small packages! Magic and Frankie are two new adorable geldings who are with us for training from NEER North in Massachusetts. We are very excited to add them to our herd of “littles,” and look forward to working with them this winter.
Magic is a 19-year old Shetland cross gelding, and he is as sweet as they come. Not much is known about this guy prior to his arrival at NEER North, but he does have some health issues that we will be addressing. He has a history of Laminitis and Cushings, and so our first steps will be having our vet take x-rays of his feet and draw blood to test for Cushings levels. Once we have a better picture of what is going on within Magic’s hooves, our farrier will begin trimming his feet with an eye towards getting everything gradually back on track. Magic is otherwise in good shape and we feel he will progress quickly with regular handling. Already he ties, leads quietly, and impressed us by taking all of our arena obstacles right in stride! Due to his size, age, and sweet disposition we could see Magic doing wonderfully in future as a companion pony with someone to dote on him. We look forward to sharing Magic’s story and progress in our program.
Frankie is a 5-year old miniature Pinto gelding. He was just recently gelded in September, shortly after arriving at NEER North. Because of this late gelding, Frankie is still a bit of a handful and gets excited around other horses—we lovingly refer to him as very sassy. One of our primary goals with Frankie is to curb this studdish behavior and get him socialized around other horses. Our first step in this direction was to make him a separate pen within our “littles” turnout paddock. This way he gets used to having the other minis nearby, while keeping everyone safe and sound. Being so young and bright, we believe that Frankie will start to catch onto new things very quickly. At just five years old, Frankie has unlimited potential and could make someone an incredible little sidekick! We look forward to progressing with Frankie’s training so that he can find his forever home.
