Boomer joins us for training from our friends at Bagaduce River Equine Rescue. He is a 12 year old, approximately 14.1 hh Paint gelding who was a stallion at the time of his arrival to BRER in January 2024. We do have a bit of his back story: Boomer was among a herd on the mid coast that was seized by the state of Maine about 10 years ago. He was rehomed at that time, and then resurfaced in the rescue network as a 7 year old. We’re not sure what happened next, but at the time of his surrender to Bagaduce, Boomer had been living with a herd of mares and geldings for at least 3 years. During this time he sired at least several foals.
Based on this history, it’s likely that Boomer never had much handling or training of any kind before arriving at Bagaduce. Kelly and her crew helped him settle, acclimate to people and learn basic skills such as leading, standing for the farrier and receiving veterinary work. He has been turned out with mares and geldings and does not display much of the stud type behaviors one might expect from a late-gelded horse. Boomer appears sound and healthy, and we look forward to continuing with the good training begun at Bagaduce. We will be sure to post further updates as they become available!
UPDATE: Boomer has been adopted! After only a short time in our program, someone came along that has the experience he needs and will continue to need while he settles into life as a solid equine citizen. Boomer’s new partner is a wonderful horsewoman, with an extensive training support system and plenty of time to give him the consistency he needs. Congratulations Boomer and happy trails to you buddy!
