Dakota is a soon-to-be two year old gelding, who joined us for training from Gerda’s Equine Rescue in August 2025. Dakota was purchased at an auction in Texas along with his mom, Cheyenne, last fall. Despite that tough start to his life, he is friendly and wants to engage with humans. Like all young horses, he has plenty to learn, but soaks up new information like a sponge! Although he will need time to grow (mentally and physically!) before he can be started under saddle, we are looking forward to providing him with a good, solid foundation so that he can make a wonderful riding partner for someone in a few years.
October 2025 update: We are having so much fun getting to know Dakota! He is soaking up everything we can teach him and is a very fun, goofy young gelding. He has been hard at work learning to lead respectfully, lunge, and stand for grooming, and recently got his first bath. He’s very bold and sensible, so it’s been a lot of fun introducing him to the obstacles. Even with all of his youthful energy, he is proving to be an excellent problem-solver and chooses to slow down and think. He has all the makings of someone’s future “heart horse”!
November 2025 update:
Dakota has been adopted! This young man did not stay long before heading off to his new home in New Hampshire. He joins previous HWH alumni, Blue (now known as Chip). Dakota will continue to be slowly brought along, with a future goal of trails and Western riding once he is old enough to be started under saddle. He may even learn to work cows! We are so thrilled for Dakota and his new family, and wish everyone many happy years together. Congratulations!
