Dziki joins our program from NEER North in Massachusetts. This striking off-track Thoroughbred mare stands 16.1 hh and is 18 years old. Dziki is unusual for a rescue, in that we have significant knowledge of her history: once retired from racing, she had fallen through the cracks and at age eight ended up in the kill pen at auction, where she was seen and saved by a rescue program. Luck was shining on this lovely mare, as she was then adopted by a passionate young rider. Dziki and her new owner learned and grew up side by side, enjoying 10 years of pleasure riding, liberty work, and simply spending time together. Unfortunately, despite best-laid plans Dziki’s owner had to move across the country suddenly due to her husband’s military commitments. With other options fallen through and desperate to ensure that her partner would land in a loving home, Dziki’s owner surrendered her to NEER North.
Dziki is good for vet and farrier, and stands quietly for bathing and grooming. She loves her buddies and can display a bit of separation anxiety if left behind in the barn or pasture. She does have fusion in a fetlock from her racing days, and will be looking for a pleasure riding home with light work and no jumping. With a mare like Dziki who is already well-established in her training and routines, we focus less on ‘re-training’ and more on helping to match her with a loving home to suit her needs. UPDATE: Dziki has been adopted! Her new mom, Kelly, has a passion for giving rescued animals a loving, forever home and fell in love with this sweet mare. Dziki will be enjoying low key pleasure rides alongside her new equine friends, and we know for sure that she will be doted on and immediately considered a part of the family. Many thanks to Kelly for opening up her home and heart to ‘Dee,’ and we wish everyone many happy years together. Congratulations!!
