Jet, aka “Rambling Jet”, is a 15hh Standardbred gelding, with us for training from Futures for Standardbreds. He is 15 years old, and raced until September 2022. He was lightly started under saddle before joining us, but needs time to rest and recuperate physically from his racing career before doing much more. Our first goal with Jet will be to let him relax and just be a horse while we play around with groundwork and body work. He’s a total sweetheart who gets along well with others and loves being groomed. We are looking forward to learning more about this handsome guy as he settles in to the program.
June 2023 update: Jet has been recovering from a paddock injury which required time off from any ridden work. During this period we hand walked him over poles and around the farm, and also worked on ground driving. He has just been cleared by the vet to begin light under saddle work, and was perfect for his first ride since last fall. We will begin slowly building up his base fitness and conditioning, and will be sure to post further updates as they become available.
September 2023 update: Jet’s run of bad luck continued throughout the summer, when he pulled shoes in turn out and ripped out a chunk of hoof wall. After 6 weeks for the hoof to regrow sufficiently, he is now sound and we will begin slowly reconditioning towards under saddle work. Due to Jet’s lengthy racing history and struggle to stay sound during his time here, we are hoping to find him a companion home. While there is a good possibility he will be sound for light work in future, he’s certainly put in his time and we would love to find him a home where he can enjoy a well-earned retirement.
UPDATE: In mid December 2023, Jet was adopted! Laura saw his picture and was moved by his story shortly after his arrival to us, and had been following his journey throughout the year. In the fall she came out for several visits, and that sealed the deal. Jet will help give Laura a refresher course in basic horsemanship, as she’s been away from the equine world for many years and is eager to reconnect. In turn, Laura will provide Jet the loving family and quiet retirement home we so hoped he would find. We are thrilled for Jet and Laura, and wish them both many happy years together.
