Jewel comes to us for training from Gerda’s Equine Rescue in Vermont. Jewel is a 12 year old small pony, standing about 11hh tall. Jewel and Sierra arrived together in mid-November, so they will remain in quarantine for a little while longer before they begin their training.
What we do know about Jewel is that she has had some handling, but maybe it wasn’t always positive. She will need to learn to be haltered, led, to stand quietly for the vet and farrier, as well as generally exposed to new experiences. From what we can tell so far, she seems to be naturally curious. We are looking forward to seeing more of that side of her as we start getting to know her!
May 2025: Since Jewel’s arrival in November, along with her herdmate and possible daughter Sierra, we have found that Jewel has some level of handling experience but maintains a lot of anxiety in the presence of humans. She stands well for the farrier, and is very confident when it comes to the obstacles in the arena, but can be jumpy for basic groundwork and startles easily during basic handling. However, her air of strength and curiosity endeared her to a repeat adopter from Horses with Hope, and she recently headed off to her new home— with Sierra, no less! Their new family is accustomed to helping fearful horses become more comfortable with people, and we have no doubt that these two sweet pony mares will thrive in their new home.
