“Maple” is a 13 yo, 15 hh Standardbred mare who joins our program from Futures for Standardbreds. Maple was a harness racer until the age of 6, when she was retired to begin a new career as a broodmare. She has since had 5 foals, and now that all of the kids are grown she is ready for the next chapter in life. Upon initial evaluation, Maple appears to be a sweet and sensible mare who enjoys attention and takes it all in stride.
After several months of training, Maple has been introduced to riding and will happily walk and trot in the arenas. She can get a bit quick at the trot as she tries to sort out her balance, so we’re working on softening, straightening and helping her to find a steady rhythm. Maple is a sensitive, forward-thinking mare who will be looking for a quiet, confident rider to continue her training. She has lovely ground manners and groundwork and has proven to be a wonderful friend to other mares in turn out.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, Maple came up lame and upon evaluation, our vet diagnosed a re-injury of what was likely an old suspensory strain from racing. Considering Maple’s age, previous career and overall unevenness in her hind end, we have decided in partnership with Futures for Standardbreds to find Maple a companion only home. This kind mare would make a wonderful partner for a horse in need of a friend. She is perfect for vet, farrier, bathing, tying and cross tying, has lovely ground manners, and is an easy keeper who is a pleasure to have in the barn. Maple is currently being fostered by a Futures for Standardbreds board member here in mid-coast Maine; if you are interested in adopting Maple please contact us.
FURTHER UPDATE: After several months at her foster home, Maple has been adopted! This lovely mare will be staying right here in mid-coast Maine and providing companionship to another mare. We are thrilled for Maple’s good fortune in finding a beautiful new home, and wish her and her new family many happy years together. Congratulations!
