Sierra comes to us for training from Gerda’s Equine Rescue in Vermont. Sierra is an 8 year old small pony, standing about 10hh tall. Sierra arrived with Jewel in mid-November, so they will remain in quarantine for a little while longer before they begin their training.
Like Jewel, Sierra has had minimal handling. Sierra appears to be more on the shy side. She will need to learn to be haltered, led, to stand quietly for the vet and farrier, as well as generally exposed to new experiences. Sierra has already shown us that she is quite food-motivated and will put her apprehension aside when her grain is involved! We are looking forward to seeing Sierra come out of her shell as we get to know her.
May 2025: Over the last few months, we have spent time getting to know Sierra and helping her get accustomed to routine handling. Sierra leans more toward the reactive side and makes her fears known— however, cookies are a great persuader, and they really helped us bridge the gap! Sierra has made a lot of progress— she went from a feral little mare to a pony that is confident in her own skin. And, lucky for her, the right person came along to scoop her up— along with Jewel! These two have headed off to their forever home with a repeat adopter who is very familiar with helping the more fearful types gain confidence and find comfort in human interaction. We are so happy for Sierra and Jewel!
