Token joins our program from Gerda’s Equine Rescue (GER) in Vermont. He is thought to be around 15 years old and was rescued from a kill pen earlier this year. Token then received some under saddle training with a foster family, and came to us to continue that education.
As Token appeared ‘hitchy’ in his hind end during our initial evaluations, we had our vet do a lameness evaluation and take x-rays. She diagnosed Token with mild arthritis in his hocks and stifles (as may be expected in a horse his age) and so we had injections done to help Token feel his best. He is now moving much more comfortably in all gaits, and we have begun regular riding. Token can have a bit of anxiety around where his friends are, but once he relaxes and connects to the handler or rider he is proving to be very sweet and willing to do what we ask. He is currently being ridden at the walk and trot in the arena, and beginning trail rides with a buddy. With a trainer to oversee the process, we could see him being suitable for a young or inexperienced rider in future as he is not spooky or overly sensitive to the aids. UPDATE: Token has been adopted! This cute little guy really settled in during his time with us, and we were thrilled to connect him and Maggie, a horsewoman from Rhode Island looking for her next partner. Token’s continued training will include continued in hand and liberty work, along with plenty of trail rides out with friends.
